Educational Enrichment

Volunteers are needed to work with children, youth and adults in a variety of programs, including Homework Help, Computer Lab, Exploring the Arts, Reading Club, Girl Power!, and Boys Group. Programs are run at centers located in Fairfax City (near GMU), Fairfax (near Fair Oaks Mall), and Centreville (near Centreville Library); the centers are Robinson Square (RS), Ragan Oaks (RO), and Barros Circle (BC), respectively.

Programs generally start and end following a school year calendar - Fall, Spring and Summer - and volunteers must be able to make a commitment of one hour a week for two to six months, depending on the length of the program.

Fall Programs will be starting up at all three community centers in late September and will include:

  • Homework Help- . Provide a safe, consistent, supportive and educational atmosphere for participants. Improve study and problem solving skills of participants. Improve educational performance of participants by assisting them in completing assignments. Allow participants to learn positive skills for communication and behavior in a secure environment, with developmentally appropriate modeling and behavior management.
  • Media Smart- Media Smart is designed to teach youth ages 11-13 about the complex media world around them, and how it can affect their health-especially in areas of nutrition and physical activity
