• How do I begin volunteering with FACETS?
First, review our website to learn more about FACETS. Read the general summary of the organization offered below and follow the links for more specific information. Second, read about our current opportunities and determine which ones are best for you based on your interests, skills, and availability. Please be aware that many of our opportunities do have age restrictions, but feel free to contact us if you have questions. Also, our more intensive programs, such as mentoring, benefit from volunteers that have previous volunteer and/or work experience in this area. If you are interested in mentoring, but have no previous experience, we encourage you to consider first volunteering for one of our shorter-term (6 months) opportunities and transitioning to mentoring when the shorter-term program ends.Third, submit a completed application - you can mail, fax, or email the application to us. Upon receipt of your application, we will contact you to discuss the next steps for volunteering. If you are having difficulty downloading the application or you have questions, please contact us.
• How do I determine which opportunities work best for me?
We encourage volunteers to take what we call a balanced approach: interests, skills, availability. Which programs really peak your interest, which programs request skills that you possess, and which programs work best with your schedule are key questions to ask yourself while reviewing volunteer opportunities.

• FACETS Information
FACETS was founded in 1988, and incorporated in 1989 as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization. It is the only nonprofit in Fairfax County to provide services to families awaiting placement into one of the three family shelters in the county. Our mission is to build strong families and safe communities by improving the quality of life for impoverished men, women, and children through comprehensive programs addressing physical, spiritual, and emotional needs. We serve homeless, precariously housed, and impoverished people who are taking positive steps towards greater self-sufficiency. FACETS provides three core services: homeless intervention services (HIS), home connections transitional housing (TH), and family enrichment services (FES). HIS includes the following components: case management, hot meals program, mobile resource center, and a support center. TH provides homeless families with a residence for two years that includes social work support and mentoring. FES consists of on-site educational programs for low-income families living in Fairfax County public housing communities. Volunteers are an important component of FACETS and can contribute to our mission in a variety of ways. For example, volunteers can mentor, tutor, drive clients to appointments, donate urgently needed items to FACETS’ pantry, or assist in the office. If you are interested in getting involved, please read about our current volunteer opportunities and contact the volunteer manager for more information. |
